"Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul." Edward Abbey
This quote means that if you have strong feelings on a subject but don't act on those feelings you could become a bitter or an unhappy person
Jordan Doddridge

"Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?"
~Ernest Gaines
--Hanut--

"Men hate each other because they fear each other, and they fear each other because they don't know each other." - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
This quote means that if you understand other people and their culture, you will be able to love them and get along.

"Culture is what your butcher would have if he were a surgeon."
-Mary Pettibone Poole, A Glass Eye at a Keyhole (1938).
I think that this is a metaphor that is used to demonstrate how having a good and broad horizon in cultures can give people many opportunities and reasons to be better in life.
<Peggy>

"Every view of the world that becomes extinct, every culture that disappears, diminishes a possibility of life." -Octavio Paz
I believe that Octavio is trying to say that culture is very simply, a way of living. If we try to exterminate a culture like the white Australians tried to do with the aborigines, we end up destroying the lives of many people and disrupt the natural balance of difference.
(Amreen)

"As the soil, however rich it may be, cannot be productive without cultivation, so the mind without culture can never produce good fruit."-Seneca (Roman Philosopher mid-1st century AD)
I think that this philosopher is saying that no matter how good the area is for a culture to grow and prosper, it needs creativity and development to actually succeed and generate good results.
[Levin]
Culture is how people see the world, and how they spend their everyday lives in it. (Natalie Pong)

Culture is a little like dropping an Alka-Seltzer into a glass-you don't see it, but somehow it does something.
external image as2.gif Hans Magnus Enzensberger quotes
This quote means that even though you can't see culture, it still grows and does something. (Roger Zahn posted this)

“The great law of culture is: Let each become all that he was capable of being; expand, if possible to his full growth; resisting all impediments, casting off all foreign, especially all noxious adhesions; and show himself at length in his own shape" (Thomas Carlyle)
This shows that You need to be capable of expanding to full growth, avoid the obstacles, and be able to shape youself. You need to let culture guide you throught life, and be one with your culture, because your culture influences the rest of your life and who you will become.
(Erik)

“People can only live fully by helping others to live. When you give life to friends you truly live. Cultures can only realize their further richness by honoring other traditions. And only by respecting natural life can humanity continue to exist.”
--Daisaku Ikeda
I think this quote means that each culture can only live peacefully with each other if they respect and honor the other cultures' traditions.
(Ariel)

“As the soil, however rich it may be, cannot be productive without cultivation, so the mind without culture can never produce good fruit.”
Seneca quotes (Roman philosopher, mid-1st century AD)
When you don't participate in culture or have your own culture, you will never be complete. Culture is like fertilizer for soil, it changes our perspective on life(and produces good fruits).
(Winnie)

"Culture is roughly anything we do and the monkeys don't." -Lord Raglan-
Human beings are thinkers. There are no other creatures on Earth other than human beings that can think. Culture is the belief, art, ways of life, and social organization of a group. In order for culture to occur, one should be able to interact with and understand others. Only human beings can do such thing.
(Dave Jung)

"I used to think that anyone doing something weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people who call
others weird who are weird." Paul McCartney
I think that he's trying to say that without knowing a person from other culture, we might consider them "weird". However, once we know their culture, people who call that culture weird might be viewed weird.
(Joo Hyun Yoon)

"Culture is what you consider yourself to be. Not what your parents and grand parents believe in, but your beliefs"
-Antonio Cardoso
This quote means that your culyure is what defines you. Your culture has a bit to do with your background, but you can change it in to what you believe in.
(Antonio)

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible." - Mahatma Gandhi
There should be no walls or windows that block cultures from coming in. This simply means that we shouldn't just know our own culture, we should get to know all cultures without any misconceptions with one another. This quote represents culture because we can see that some countries fight with another for believeing in something different, but we should understand different cultures, and view from other people.
(Karen Chen)

"Culture is a little like dropping an Alka-Seltzer into a glass-you don't see it, but somehow it does something."- Hans Magnus Erzensberger
What this quote is saying is that you can not know what kind of culture you are by just looking at you, but it is an important part of your life. It will do something to you eventually, even if you do not notice. So do pay attention to your culture.
(Isabela)

"Strangers in a new culture see only what they know." - Unknown
I think what this quote is trying to say is that when people are around something they don't understand or aren't familiar with, they tend to judge and make assumptions based solely on what they see, and not what they know. There is so much diversity in this world, and everyone needs to learn to be more open-minded and accepting towards other cultures. We are all so different, yet there is so much that binds us together.

"Culture is like wealth; it makes us more ourselves, it enables us to express ourselves." -Philip Gilbert Hamerton
Culture is ideas, beliefs, customs, and traditions of a group of people that evolves over time. It is formed according to people's way of living. Thus, culture includes our lifestyles, and also ourselves. Wealth helps us to be more like us, and express ourselves, Since culture is part of ourselves, it allows us to be more like a human being, and it helps to express how we live.
(Wendy Kim)

“As the soil, however rich it may be, cannot be productive without culture, so the mind, without cultivation, can never produce good fruit.”
~ Senca (Lucius Annaeus Seneca)
I think this quote is stating how culture is the heart of all the good and unique dishes our world has to offer and without culture we wouldn’t have all the food we have today. This relates to culture because every culture has his or her own likes and dislikes towards food and is inspired and influenced by ones culture for example religion. Culture and background is what makes ones food truly amazing without it we wouldn’t be able to produce ‘good fruit’.
(Vivian Zhang)

“A culture is made -- or destroyed -- by its articulate voices.”
-Ayn Rand
I believe this quote shows a people’s significance in defining a culture, in that the changing views, values, and beliefs can change a culture in various ways. An example of this is how the influence of Martin Luther King Jr. helped change the racist laws in the American South, bringing eminent change to southern culture.
(Tracey Zhang)

"Culture is like dropping an Alka-Seltzer into a glass- you don't see it, but somehow it does something."
(Hans Magnus Enzensberger)
I believe that this quote shows how important culture really is to people. As most people know an alka-seltzer is a tablet that you take for headaches etc. Once you drop that tablet into the water you can't see it but it definitely does something to the water so that you will get better. I think that this is just like culture because you can't actually see culture but it makes you who you are and it is practically the base to life. Without culutre and the understanding of a specific culture you are not as well rounded and can't think out of the box and understand things as easy as someone who has a very strong culture. So as I was saying, culture is basically the base to life and you cant see it but it definitely does something to your life and how you act.

(Hannah Clark)

"Culture can only realize their further richness by honoring other traditions and only by respecting natural life can humanity continue to exist." - Daisaku Ikeda -
I think this quote is trying to show the importance of respecting and understanding other cultures and traditions.
(Julie Kim)

"Two half-truths do not make a truth, and two half-cultures do not make a culture."
-Arthur Koestler
I believe that this quote is talking how many different cultures there are and not one of them would be identical. I also believe that this quote is trying to tell you to always believe in one thing for if you try to learn and know all cultures you would face confusion and would definitely walk the wrong path.
(Mitchell Seo)

As the soil, however rich it may be, cannot be productive without cultivation, so the mind without culture can never produce good fruit.” Seneca quotes (Roman philosopher, mid-1st century AD)
This quote means that culture is only useful and will grow only if the people understands the culture and try to care about it.
-Daniel Kang-

“Culture is a little like dropping an Alka-Seltzer into a glass, you don't see it but somehow it does something" -Andre Malraux
I think this quote means that, even though you don't think about culture, it still affects what you do in your life and changes you.
(Phillip)

What would it be like to have not only color vision but culture vision, the ability to see the multiple worlds of others. -Mary Catherine Bateson
This quote means that if we could not only see in color and also the way other cultures view things we could understand alot more about the world.
-Harri.

“People can only live fully by helping others to live. When you give life to friends you truly live. Cultures can only realize their further richness by honoring other traditions. And only by respecting natural life can humanity continue to exist.” -Daisaku Ikeda
This quote is trying to tell us that we have to respect and honor not only your own culture, but also other people's cultures, which is the way of a culture can survive. I believe culture is one important element of humanity, and if they are respected, then they would not be extinct. Culture is the "natural life"--- the way humans live, regardless of where they come from, and what they believe in. Culture is naturally shaped by humans depending on what they do, and it is considered "life" because depending on how others treat each others' culture, it can be extinct or existent.
(Katrina)

"An army without culture is a dull-witted army, and a dull-witted army cannot defeat the enemy. " ~Mao Zedong

This expresses the effects of culture upon human beings physically and mentally. In the book The Master Key System, it states that everything a person can do is what he/she already is, and the who ever he/she is, he/she must have already thought about being such a person. So therefore, everything a person can do or be is what they think. A large part of culture is faith. Without faith or hope, people automatically lose the will or motive to do anything. This is why culture is so important to the human race, it keeps everything going.
(Cindy)

“Culture is roughly anything we do and the monkeys don’t” -Lord Raglan
Culture is the ideas, beliefs, customs and tradition of a group of people. For you to develop a culture, you need to think, express, and talk. Lord Raglan was slightly wrong in a way, since monkeys can think too. But what this quote means is that only humans have culture, and that all humans have culture.

(Brian Li)

"A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people." (Mohandas Gandhi)
A nation’s culture lives within its people and without someone or something to follow and acknowledge
that culture it wouldn’t exist. (Ryan C.)

"Culture can only realize their further richness by honoring other traditions and only by respecting natural life can humanity continue to exist." - Daisaku Ikeda
I think this quote means that some of the most important aspects in a culture are there traditions and by respecting that, the culture will never seize to exist. (Cody)

“France, and the whole of Europe have a great culture and an amazing history. Most important thing though is that people there know how to live! In America they’ve forgotten all about it. I’m afraid that the American culture is a disaster”- Johnny Depp
By this quote, I think he means that culture isn’t just the things we see but also the way people spend their time everyday. When we sit in front of our television screen 24 hours non-stop, we are doing it cause our culture allows us to. When we are staying up late every night studying, that is also part of our culture. In conclusion, I think that he means that no matter what sort of things we do everyday, it is our culture.
[Reina]

“Culture is a little like dropping an Alka-Seltzer into a glass-you don't see it, but somehow it does something."- Hans Magnus Erzensberger
I think this quote means that sometimes you can’t see a culture with your eyes, but you can feel it with your heart. You also can not understand a certain culture by just looking at it, you have to live the culture to actually full understand it and to feel it.

Those who know nothing of foreign laguages know nothing of thier own.”- Jonann Wolfgang Von Goethe
I think this quote means than not only do you have to know about your own culture but learning about your surrondings to exist.

"Without culture, and the relative freedom it implies, society, even when perfect, is but a jungle. This is why any authentic creation is a gift to the future." -Albert CamusI believe that this quote means that any society depends on culture. Without culture, there would be chaos. Any new creation is accounted as a "gift to the future" because of the uniqueness of the creation. (Oliver Yang)

"Culture is a framework in which we communicate." - Stephen Roberts

I think that this quote means that everything we talk about is related to culture. Like how a building would never reach outside of it’s framework, we would never communicate about anything outside of the topic, culture. (Allyn Xu)
